How to Build Zion
Building Zion on your street requires a change in perspective, not a massive life change

Building a Zion neighborhood is about consistent effort, not an exhausting sprint. We're all juggling lots in life and don't need another thing on the list. However, inviting neighbors into the things we're already doing on a daily basis can make them more enjoyable and bring us energy and joy!

New friendships can develop as you invite neighbors to share in your daily life. Consider these area:

  • Exercise - Whether you like to walk, run, ride, lift, or any other kind of activity, inviting neighbors can make it better.
  • Eating - We all eat and meals with friends don't need to be fancy. In fact, they don't need to be meals at all! Invite someone to come over or meet up for dessert, trying that new restaurant, or one of the standard three meals of the day.
  • Hobbies - If you like doing something, chances are good you can easily find someone else who'd like to try it or already likes it. Or maybe you like to paint and the other person likes to write, you can do it together!
  • Regular Outings - If you have a regular reason you get out, invite someone else along. A date night with a spouse can turn into a double date. Want to see that new movie? Invite a friend along. Even shopping at the grocery store is more fun with a friend along.
  • Hosting an Event - If you like hosting, be sure to go easy on yourself. Your home doesn't need to look like the palace of Versailles to be ready for guests. Book groups, movie nights, craft parties, and many more things can be accomplished with little prep and even no money spent!
Sustainable building

Invite neighbors to join you in what you already do

Identify What You Already Do
Choose one thing you like and can do consistently. It can be easier to invite someone to something that is already part of your life.
Invite
Start with one person or a small group. If you aren't sure who to ask, listen for opportunities at church or in other settings. Something like, "I've been trying to exercise more," could be a chance to invite someone on your morning walk.
Connect Deeply
Go beyond small talk. Ask questions. Listen. Don't force anything, but do ask questions and share details about your life. Connection comes when we show our real lives to each other and are received with respect.
Make It Regular
Community requires frequent connection. If you find something you like doing with a neighbor, make it regular. Get it on the calendar. Figure out a frequency that works for you and try for it.
Create a Communication Channel
Some people like a text, others like a call, and still others just like a knock on the door. If you have a bigger group, text threads or apps like WhatsApp make for each communication. Another benefit of this? You can keep the communication and fun going.
Keep Going
If something fizzles, that's okay! Try something else. Most relationships take time to build. And building a true community takes real persistence.
Join the Movement
Zion won’t be built by programs or callings alone. It will be built by everyday disciples, one neighborhood at a time.
